Massive steel block
Acetylene-cut
Corroded
Two massive blocks of steel fit smoothly together by means of interlocking protrusions and indentations. ‘Joining-1’ belongs to the series ’Energy Flow’ and this massive sculpture, weighing almost a tonne, radiates tranquillity and steadiness. In its joined state it conveys an impression of the flow and play of energy – heavy as it is, it seems as if some movement would not be impossible.
The two parts of ‘Joining-1’ are displaced in relation to one another, giving the impression that there is an incomplete and continuing internal motion between them. Also, that the maximum uptake of energy within this combination only becomes possible when the blocks are joined together on a flat surface. The desire to attain this ideal brings out a perception of movement, even though any real movement is in fact improbable.
